Questions
Lighting control, answered
What we hear most from Utah homeowners, builders and designers about lighting control. Short, straight answers.
The three approaches
What is lighting control?
Lighting control replaces single switches with keypads that run scenes. One press sets every light in a room to the level you chose, and the system can follow a schedule or answer to an app. AudioWorks designs, installs and programs lighting control for Utah homes.
What is the difference between standard switching, hybrid and centralized lighting control?
Standard switching is a multi-gang of regular switches, one for each circuit. Hybrid replaces those switches with a keypad and smart switches, and it is the retrofit path for a finished home. Centralized takes all the switching off the wall and leaves a single keypad, with the dimming in panels out of sight, and it is the path for new construction.
What is a hybrid lighting control system?
A hybrid system puts a keypad and smart switches where the old rockers were. The devices talk wirelessly, so no new control wire runs through finished walls. You get scenes, an app and schedules without opening up the house.
What is a centralized lighting control system?
A centralized system runs every lighting circuit to dimming panels in an equipment room or closet. The walls keep only keypads, and one keypad can take the place of several dimmers or switches. Because the wiring has to run back to the panels, we plan it before the electrical rough-in.
Which approach is right for my home?
Building new or remodeling down to the studs, choose centralized. It gives you the cleanest wall. In a home that is already finished, choose hybrid, because it works with the wiring already in the wall. Some homes use both, with keypads and panels in the main rooms and simple controls in guest rooms and baths.
Keypads and brands
Which brands do you install?
Our lighting control brands are Lutron HomeWorks and GE Proseo by Savant. Lutron keypads include Alisse, Aviena, Palladiom, Sunnata, Signature Series, Architrave and seeTouch. GE Proseo keypads include Ascend, Metropolitan, Echo and Flex. We also service and replace Vantage systems.
What is the difference between Savant and GE Proseo?
Savant makes the whole-home system and the app. GE Proseo is Savant's line of lighting and shade products for professional install, made by GE Lighting, a Savant company. Ascend, Metropolitan, Echo and Flex keypads are all GE Proseo, and they work with the Savant app.
What is a Lutron Alisse keypad?
Alisse is a wired Lutron HomeWorks keypad with round buttons, each ringed by a thin glowing halo. It comes in seven hand-finished metals and four matte finishes, in square and rectangular plates. It suits a centralized system, because it runs on low-voltage wire.
Can a keypad button say what I want it to say?
Yes. We engrave the buttons with the scene, such as Relax, Evening or All Off, so nobody has to learn which light is which. We keep it to a few buttons in most rooms, and we settle the names with you before we order.
What keypad finishes can I get?
Our keypads range from hand-finished brass and bronze to brushed metal, matte black and soft white. Lutron Alisse has eleven finishes, and GE Proseo Ascend has nine. Tell us the room and the hardware, and we help you match it.
New and finished homes
When should lighting control be planned in a new home?
Before the electrical rough-in. A centralized system needs every lighting circuit run back to the panels, and the panels need a home. After drywall, hybrid is the way in.
Can lighting control be added to a finished home?
Yes. A hybrid system replaces the old rockers with a keypad and smart switches, and they talk wirelessly. Some of these devices need a neutral wire in the switch box, so we check the boxes on our visit. Where a box has no neutral, a wire-free keypad can do the job.
Do you service Vantage lighting systems?
Yes. We service Vantage systems, and we replace them when the time comes. Tell us what is on the wall and what it is doing, and we come take a look.
Do you work in Southern Utah?
Yes. We work across the Wasatch Front, in Park City and Heber, and in Southern Utah, including St. George, Santa Clara and Ivins. Put the address on the form and we plan the visit.
Cost
How much does lighting control cost?
We quote after we see the plans or walk the home. The approach, the number of lighting circuits, the number of keypads and the finish drive the price. Tell us about the project and we come back with a real number.
For builders, architects and designers
How does AudioWorks work with builders, architects and designers?
We plan the approach and the keypads with you, coordinate the panels with your electrician, and program the system before move-in. The designer picks the finish, and we make sure it is a finish the keypad comes in.
What does the electrician do on a lighting control job?
Your electrician runs the line-voltage wiring to the control panels and installs the line-voltage keypads, dimmers and switches we supply. We supply and install the panels and processors, run the low-voltage keypad wire and program the system.
When should a builder bring AudioWorks into a project?
Before the electrical rough-in, and earlier if you can. The panels need a home, and the plan has to run every lighting circuit back to them. After drywall, we can still help with a hybrid system.
Can a designer choose the keypad finish?
Yes. Lutron Alisse and GE Proseo Ascend come in brushed and hand-finished metals as well as matte, so a keypad can match the door hardware or disappear into the wall. Send us the finish schedule and we match it.
